Hey, I’m Shelby!
Visionary. Brand Designer. Creative. Determined. Resourceful as heck. Small but mighty.
In 2016, I left my job with a dream to start a business and absolutely no plan.
And so I began the rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship.
On a sunny day in July of 2016, I sat on my front porch brainstorming business ideas with my mom. I had recently worked for a stationer and sold wedding invitations. So I decided to start with what I knew best at the time, which was wedding invitations. The next week, I opened a business checking account with my mom’s $500 contribution and started my business, Shelby Made It.
I didn’t make money right away,
and I quickly realized that although I spent four years in college learning how to be a designer, now I needed to learn how to run a business - and so my journey of self-education began. While driving for Lyft and nannying for multiple families, I taught myself how to build a website, how to execute a trade show, how to market my business, build relationships with printers and other vendors - I did it all.
Over two years, I grew my wedding design business to support me and appear 'successful'.
But once I got there, something was missing. Working long hours alone in my office wasn’t fulfilling or challenging me anymore. I wanted collaboration, I wanted to teach and continue to grow and learn. I knew it was time to move on.
After much introspection, I realized that what I really loved doing was working with other businesses, hearing their story, and helping them grow.
I fell in love with the YouTube channel, The Futur and watched Chris Do coach Melinda Livsey through her own transition from brand designer to offering this service I had never heard of, brand strategy. I was immediately hooked.
In November of 2018, I took on my first client offering brand strategy and web design.
I walked them through the process of figuring out who their ideal client is, how they are different from their competition, defining brand values, creating a mission statement, setting 1, 3, and 5 year goals. I sifted through pages and pages of text to write their web copy, I gave creative direction on updating headshots. Ideas were flowing, the fire in me was back and I was on cloud 9.
I knew this was what I was meant to do. I actually said to my family and friends, “I feel like I’m stepping into my true self”.
Since that experience, brand strategy, logo and website design have become my primary offerings. However, I don’t like to limit myself to those categories. I love coming up with big, bold, ideas, and often, I am not a master at creating that thing. This is my favorite part, when we can invite other creatives into the project to bring their unique skills to the table.
